Hikari "Kari" Kamiya, known as Hikari Yagami (八神 ヒカリ Yagami Hikari?) in Japan, is a fictional character in the anime and manga series Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02. She is usually called "Kari" in the English versions. Hikari means light in Japanese and she bears the Crest of Light and the Digi-egg of Light.

She is partnered to Gatomon and is the younger sister of Taichi "Tai" Kamiya. Kari, by nature, is kind and sweet-hearted, looking for the best in people and avoiding fights when possible. However, she can be serious, especially in dangerous or difficult situations, and has a dark side that is used by her enemies. Lara Jill Miller provides her voice in the English dub of the series and Kae Araki does her voice in the Japanese version

Kari was not among the original seven DigiDestined who entered the Digital World from summer camp; she was at home with the flu. However, Kari was reunited with Tai when he was sucked into a dimensional warp following his successful victory over Etemon. He could only stay for a short while, leaving when he realized that the Digital World was in bad shape and needed his help.

Tai would later reunite with Kari again when he and the other DigiDestined entered the real world to pursue Myotismon, who was seeking to find and kill the eighth DigiDestined. He, along with the seven original DigiDestined, were specifically looking for the eighth Digivice. Gatomon, one of Myotismon's henchmen, was the first to suspect that Kari was the eighth DigiDestined when she recognized her as a Digimon, deciding to kill her just to play it safe. However, Kari turned around and Gatomon hestitated, running away while confused on why she couldn't kill Kari.

With Wizardmon's aid, Gatomon learns that Kari is not only the eighth Digidestined, but she is her Digimon partner as well, regaining her memories of searching for someone. However, when Myotismon discovered that Gatomon was the eighth DigiDestined's partner, he held her captive to try to find the eighth DigiDestined. Kari turned herself in to stop the pain his minions were inflicting. During the battle with Myotismon, Wizardmon gave Kari her Crest of Light while Tai vainly tossed over her Digivice, with DemiDevimon intercepting. Myotismon attempted to end the battle by killing Kari, but Wizardmon stepped in and took the deathblow for her. When he died, Kari cried as her Crest is evoked and her Digivice began glowing, forcing DemiDevimon to let go. Tai then caught it and threw it to Kari. When she caught it, a fearful Myotismon, realizing Kari's true power, shouted "Not her, no!" Then with her digivice in hand, her crest glowed to enable Gatomon to digivolve into Angewomon and kill Myotismon. However, when Myotismon resurrects into Venom Myotismon, Angewomon shot an arrow of light into Tai, allowing Agumon to Warp Digivolve into WarGreymon, who was able to destroy Venom Myotismon.

Kari accompanied the seven other DigiDestined when they returned to the Digital World. During this time, an odd spirit spoke and acted through Kari's body; Kari appeared to be the only person who could communicate with this spirit. When Tai and Matt started to fight one another, the spirit took control of Kari's body and ended the scuffle. Kari was possessed once again when she was underneath Machinedramon's city and saw the enslaved Numemon. She led a revolt, disposing WaruMonzaemon; the freed Numemon pronounced her Queen Kari before they sacrificed themselves to protect her from Machinedramon.

In the final confrontation with Piedmon, after everyone but T.K. and Kari have been turned into key chains, the two young DigiDestined were left in great peril, hanging on to but a lone rope stretching to the sky, Piedmon cut the rope saying "It looks like you two are falling for each other". As she began to fall faster than T.K. Kari mentioned her fright, which gave T.K. the hope to evoke Angemon's digivolution into MagnaAngemon, and save them from certain death.

DIGIMON ADVENTURES 2#

Kari grew in a number of ways during the two and a half years between Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02 (three and a half years in the dub); she became more mature, perkier and braver. Physically, Kari grew taller and replaced the whistle around her neck with a digital camera. She now enjoys taking pictures, and likes to play practical jokes and to tease her friends. When the DigiDestined come to the Digital World their outfits change; while Davis, Yolei and Cody receive entirely new outfits, T.K. and Kari only change footwear, though Kari also obtains a pair of pink fingerless gloves. Because Davis Motomiya- a new DigiDestined and leader - has a crush on her, Kari often teases him by flirting with T.K. T.K. and Kari share a special bond created not only by their previous adventures in the Digital World, but also through the course of events when he senses her feelings in the Dark World. Both T.K. and Davis seem to like Kari, while she never fully makes her feelings known; Davis often becomes jealous, which sometimes frustrates Kari and sometimes makes her giggle and laugh.

While searching for Gatomon’s lost Tail Ring, Kari, Yolei Inoue (another new DigiDestined) and Ken Ichijouji (the former Digimon Emperor of the Digital World who becomes a new DigiDestined) found their way into the Dark World and eventually to the Dark Ocean, where Kari began to lose her composure due to her previous visit. She and Ken struggled under the hold of the Dark Ocean. This difficult situation was taken advantage of by a Blossomon. It took Yolei's words and a slap to help Kari return to her normal self. This bonding experience gave Aquilamon and Gatomon the power to DNA digivolve to Silphymon; it also gave Kari the heart to help Ken.

During Christmas, Kari, Izzy (one of the original Digidestined) and their Digimon were sent to Hong Kong to help the Asian DigiDestined, where all three of the Poi Brothers (Chinese Digi-Destined) developed a crush on her. After sending all of the Digimon back to their world and destroying all the Control Spires, she and the other DigiDestined faced the threat of Yukio Oikawa. He kidnapped Ken and planted Dark Spores into other children. Kari and the other DigiDestined didn't realize that he was being controlled by the disembodied spirit of Myotismon.

After harvesting the Dark Spores, Myotismon emerged from Oikawa, becoming MaloMyotismon. After some fighting, MaloMyotismon created a world of illusions; each DigiDestined was subjected to their true desires and wants. Kari's desire was for humans and Digimon to live side by side, making it a better world for everyone. Gatomon and Raidramon broke her free of the illusion. She then joined with the other kids, who were in the process of breaking free from their illusions. Kari used the power of the dream dimension, wishing for Gatomon to become stronger; she split into Angewomon and Nefertimon and DNA digivolved with Aquilamon to become Silphymon; all three forms appeared at the same time. After the fighting ended, Kari saw one of her dreams come true. Both the real world and Digital World lived in peace together.

Pokemon Haruka/May♥

Pokemon Advance: May

May = English

Haruka = Japanese

Aura = French

May (Japanese: ハルカ Haruka) is a ten-year-old Pokémon Coordinator from the anime and a traveling companion of Ash. Her goal is to compete in Pokémon Contests and win ribbons, win the Grand Festivals of the different regions, and become a top Coordinator. She traveled through Hoenn and Kanto with Ash, Brock, and her little brother Max. She is the daughter of Norman and Caroline, and her starter Pokémon was a Torchic given to her by Professor Birch

May is a young Coordinator who loves shopping and eating treats. She has a particular fondness for food, especially noodles; when someone steals her food, she gets angered from head to toe. May is generally very sweet and optimistic, though she shows a tougher side sometimes, such as when she argues with her little brother, Max. Even though they argue often, she has shown that she deeply cares for her brother.

She loves cute Pokémon, flashy techniques, and has a tendency to rely on luck, often using her Skitty's Assist or her Munchlax's Metronome. She sometimes takes an interest in helping other people with romantic problems. She loves making her own Pokéblocks with recipes that she thinks up, including ones called "May's Purple Surprise" and "May's Pink Surprise" (Japanese: Haruka's Delicious and Haruka's Delicious 2).

When May debuted in the anime, she did not like Pokémon at all and was only interested in becoming a Pokémon Trainer so she could travel. Everyone expected her to become a Trainer, to follow in her Gym Leader father's footsteps. However, after seeing a Pokémon Contest in All Things Bright and Beautifly!, she decided to become a Pokémon Coordinator. Though she was initially shown to not know much about Pokémon or attacks, she gradually gained experience through her journey and soon became a talented coordinator, with her skill being displayed in her Grand Festival rankings in the Hoenn and Kanto regions. Dawn once referred to her as the "Princess of Hoenn" when they met.

During her journey, she finds a rival in Drew, a skilled and sometimes arrogant Coordinator who was one of her main inspirations to try harder to further her skills. Another rival of hers, Harley, is a flamboyant man who goes to extremes to beat May. At the Kanto Grand Festival, May competed against Solidad, an experienced Coordinator to whom she lost to in the semi-finals. At the end of the Advanced Generation series, she left to compete with Drew, Harley and Solidad in the Johto region, aiming to find "her own style". May has Contest Passes to compete in Hoenn, Kanto and Johto.

May at the Wallace Cup

May reappeared from Our Cup Runneth Over! to Strategy With a Smile! to participate in the Wallace Cup alongside Ash, Dawn and Zoey. During this period, she wore the Emerald Version of her outfit. May made it all the way to the finals of the Wallace Cup, but narrowly lost to Dawn in the end.

May has a personal ending theme song, I Won't Lose! ~Haruka's Theme~, performed by KAORI. It was first used as background music in the episode Curbing the Crimson Tide and again in next episode, What I Did for Love.

OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS!!

Trivia

  • May was the first female in-game protagonist to travel with Ash.
  • May is the only main character who has had two of the same Pokémon as Ash, which are Squirtle and Bulbasaur.
  • She is the only one of Ash's friends to catch more than one starter Pokémon.
  • She is the only one of Ash's friends who started off not liking Pokémon.
  • She is the only beginner trainer that was not given an introduction by the Narrator in their first episode. Instead, she gave her own first person introduction.
  • May was the second of Ash's friends to have a lead role in a Pokémon movie, the first being her brother Max.
  • May and Max are the only friends of Ash not to meet Ash's rival, Gary Oak, at one time or another. Ironically, May took one of Professor Oak's Squirtle, just as Gary had done when he started out. Also they both ended up getting an Eevee along their journeys and evolving it into an Eeveelution introduced in the generation after the character was introduced.
  • May and Max are two of three of Ash's friends who has had their father make an appearance in the anime. The other is Brock.
  • When May reappears as a guest character, she appeared in five episodes, compared to the two episodes Misty appeared in for her guest appearance during the Hoenn saga. However, Misty also made a second guest appearance from The Scheme Team to A Real Cleffa Hanger, a further three episodes. Misty also appeared in four Pokémon Sunday/Chronicles specials, an option not available to May.
  • May owns the second most Pokémon that have evolved twice since they were obtained, with three, only after Ash who has four. Though, for both Trainers, they are the final form Fire-type starter from their own region (Blaziken), the final form Grass-type starter from the other region that appeared in Generation III's handheld games (Venusaur), and the first Pokémon that they caught from the wild, their region's native butterfly (Beautifly). These correspond to Ash's Charizard, Sceptile, and Butterfree. Ash also has a Staraptor.
  • The only Pokémon she has that remained unevolved are Munchlax and Skitty. Coincidentally, both are Normal-type, and each would only need to evolve once to reach their final stage.
  • May is the only one of Ash's friends that has never owned a Generation II Pokémon (excluding Max, who does not yet have a Pokémon of his own).
  • May is the only one of Ash's female friends to have never fought a gym leader of any sort. She did, however, initially intend to go on her own badge quest before deciding to be a Coordinator, and did in fact battle in a Gym, but with a Gym assistant.
  • May's contest cry is "Take the stage!" (US) and "Stage on!" (Japan).
  • All of May's major rivals have Bug-type Pokémon. Drew has Masquerain and Butterfree, Harley has Ariados, and Solidad has Butterfree.
  • May is the only female character Ash has traveled with who has met both of the other girls that Ash has traveled with.
  • Five out of seven of May's Pokémon have a chance of 87.5% of being male in the games, namely Munchlax, Blaziken, Glaceon, Venusaur, and Wartortle.
